The second round of the national champs was held in Christchurch and the Wellington Wildcats went down for the weekend.
Andy and Toni O'dell, a couple of friends from Southend have just immigrated to Christchurch, so I took the opportunity to head down on the friday to say hi and spent the night wandering in search of fush and chups before heading for a drink to celebrate Toni's news that she was now eligible to teach in NZ.
Saturday started with the 80s relived driving Andy's old Sigma SE with its amazing control centre of a dashboard and horrific orange digital display.
The games started out pretty well with us taking chc 'b' team 17-5, before another really tight game with their 'a' team which we lost after a reasonable comeback. We made really hard work of our last game of the day, but eventually took the ginja ninjas 15-10 after again hitting the time cap, my highlight being the fact that I got my first double happiness ;-)
The saturday night party had a hunting and fishing theme that wasn't brilliantly supported, though the bunny costume and a few fishing rods stood out, and a good enough time was had for only 11 of our 14 players to be present at the start of our game against bluefish.
At halftime and 9-0 down this game was looking like a whitewash, but thankfully we managed to salvage our trousers by 2 points in the 2nd half.
The rest of the day was spent playing Manawatu, first losing to them in the last pool match, then beating them 17-10 in the 3rd 4th playoff.
Then it was just left to watch Canterbury win an awesome final 14-13, hit the New York steak house for a big protein feed, and then the flight home.
